Throughout the month of May, the Muslim community has been observing the holy month of Ramadan. This is a month of intense prayer, dawn-to-dusk fasting and nightly feasts. The fasting is intended to bring the faithful closer to God and to remind them of the suffering of those less fortunate.
Pct. 2 has provided security, traffic, and parking assistance for the NAMCC (North Austin Muslim Community Center) during normal prayer times over the years and even more so during Ramadan, especially at night. Constable Ballesteros and some of the deputies have even played some pickup basketball games with some of the youth at the mosque. Deputy Oshay Garden likes to pass out small stuffed animals to the smaller children.
Our office will continue strengthening these relationships with the Muslim community by reinforcing positive interactions with law enforcement and providing knowledge and training in the event of an active shooter.
